About Me

An Irish expat working in Technology Down Under

About Me

I’m Kevin, but folks usually just call me Kev. I’m a digital transformation specialist and product leader who’s passionate about leveraging technology to solve complex business challenges. Originally from Ireland, I’ve called sunny Sydney home since September 2019, where I was granted permanent residency through Australia’s prestigious Global Talent visa programme—recognition reserved for individuals identified as among the brightest global talent in their respective fields.

My Journey

My adventure began in 2013 when I graduated from University College Cork with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business Information Systems, earning the title “College Scholar.” I cut my teeth at Version 1, Ireland’s largest IT consulting firm, working on digital transformation projects across Insurance, Finance, and Utilities sectors throughout the UK and Ireland.

A pivotal moment came when CoreHR caught my attention. Despite not meeting their years of experience requirements, I was determined to prove that quality matters more than quantity. I reached out directly to their head recruiter to elaborate on my experience—and it worked! Within a year of joining as a mid-level Business Analyst, I’d been promoted to Senior Business Analyst, and twelve months later, I became the youngest Product Owner in the company’s history.

With a Product Manager role on the table, I decided it was time for a different kind of adventure. I embarked on a solo journey across 22 countries spanning Asia, South America, North America, and Europe—making friends everywhere along the way.

Building a Career in Australia

After my world tour (fortunately completed just before COVID-19 hit), I landed in Sydney and began with a short contract at PlayfairTan, a boutique wealth management firm. This provided the perfect introduction to Sydney life while allowing me to dive back into meaningful work.

I then joined UbiCar, an innovative start-up using technology to create fairer insurance solutions. Working alongside international Insurtech players like Raxel Telematics and tigerLabs, I led the team that launched Australia’s first pay-per-km insurance product—a breakthrough in the industry.

When COVID-19 forced UbiCar to close in October 2020, the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC WA), who had been underwriting our initiative, offered me a contract role that extended through November 2021. From there, I joined Merkle ANZ (a Dentsu company) to work on major digital transformation projects while actively participating in Dentsu’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion council across Australia and New Zealand.

After completing my engagement with Merkle in May 2023, I returned to the excellent team at PlayfairTan for another project before taking on a government contract role with Transport for NSW. Here, I worked in the Safety, Policy, Environment, and Regulations division, collaborating on projects to better the lives of NSW residents. After two years with Transport for NSW, I took a well-deserved break and travelled through Europe for several weeks from July to September 2024. Now I’m energised and ready to find my next challenge!

Beyond Work

While building my career in Australia, my friends and I established an LGBTQ+ Social and Networking group in Sydney. New members are always welcome—feel free to reach out if you’re interested!

I’m also deeply committed to giving back to the community. I’m currently engaged with the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and have previously volunteered with Barnardos Ireland, Disability Ireland, and ALONE Ireland. As Oscar Wilde said, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”

What’s Next?

Sydney is where I’m planting my roots for the long haul. Whether you’re interested in a coffee chat (virtual or in-person), discussing global politics, or even just talking about the weather (an Irish specialty!), I’d love to connect.
